His thirst for exploration led the diplomat and archaeologist Max von Oppenheim to the discovery in 1899 of the remains of a very advanced ancient civilization at the site of Tell Halaf, in northern Syria. He was one of the greatest archaeologists of the 20th century. The Max von Oppenheim edition symbolizes the fascination that the East held for Oppenheim since his childhood. The design of the solid 925 silver writing instrument is inspired by the domes of Eastern mosques. The body and cone are decorated with inlays of pale gray translucent lacquer. The finely engraved Bedouin pattern on the 18K gold nib recalls Oppenheim's passion for the tribes of the Arab world.
