Throughout history, great artists have narrated the human experience in a universal language of form and beauty. The Montblanc Masters of Art collection honors their eternal contribution to the quest for perfection in art - a quest that Montblanc celebrates and participates in. Henri Matisse is a central figure in the 20th-century art world, whose revolutionary use of artistic means of expression helped set the tone for modern art. Respectfully acknowledging the pioneering work of this distinguished and fascinating French artist, Montblanc created the Masters of Art Homage to Henri Matisse Limited Edition 888. Having grown up in Bohain, in northern France, then a thriving center of the textile industry, Matisse was fascinated by fabrics from an early age and transformed his studio into a veritable treasure trove of textiles. Initially, he used textiles only as background elements in his compositions, but these fabrics later became a central element of his artistic exploration, influencing his interest in decorative patterns and harmonious colors, as evidenced by his iconic painting La Blouse Roumaine, which is the main source of inspiration for the Limited Edition 888. While the structure of the cap and the upper part of the body is inspired by the surface of the canvas, the slightly shiny red and blue lacquer represents the main colors of this artwork. The decorative elements on the body and cone recall the traditional blouse depicted in the painting. Beyond his vibrant canvases and captivating sculptures, Henri Matisse's pencil drawings played a fundamental role in his artistic process, serving as a direct and intimate means to explore form, distill emotion, and perfect the pure and expressive line that defines his iconic aesthetic. Among these is his drawing Grande tête, from 1952, whose refined image is engraved on the handcrafted solid gold Au 750/1000 nib. The generously rounded, almost sculptural shape of the cap is a nod to the pronounced curves of many of Matisse's sculptures, reflecting his combination of techniques and different means of expression. Black onyx is not only present at the base of the cone but also surrounds the Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl on the cap, framed by a solid gold Au 750/1000 ring. The unusually organic shape of the black lacquered clip is inspired by the multicolored arrangement of leaf-like shapes in Matisse's composition, La Gerbe.
