Louis II (August 25, 1845 – June 13, 1886), nicknamed the Swan King or the Fairy Tale King, was King of Bavaria from 1864 until his death in 1886. He embodied his penchant for extravagant castles by building three masterpieces of architecture: Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee, and Neuschwanstein, a fairy-tale interpretation of the medieval fortress. He made the swan, symbol of the legend of Lohengrin, his royal emblem. This motif is immortalized in the various castles of Louis II.
